Being a non-Arab, one may find it very difficult when he first started learning proper recitation of the Quran. Here we will share with you some of the ways, which we found very useful for rapidly facilitating the learning of Quran with Tajweed.

  1. Listen and imitate.

Listen as much as you can of Quranic recitation. For beginners, it is best to select a slow monotonous recitation, e.g. Husayri (RH). Listen and try to repeat after it. You will find that soon you are getting the hang of it.

  1. Learn Tajweed rules.

The word “Tajweed” is an Arabic meaning of ‘proficiency’ or ‘doing something well’. It is also known as elocution.

It teaches you how to pronounce certain words so you can read the Quran correctly. Each letter is specifically pronounced from a specific part of the mouth, and the Quran should be recited as it is written exactly,

So if you applied all the rules of Tajweed that would be much better. The Quran says, or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation, which implies reading the Quran with Tajweed or with care.

  1. Take each rule one at a time.

When you learn one rule of Tajweed, practice it and get the hang of it first before starting on the next rule. If you try to master too many rules at one go, there is a chance that you will get overwhelmed and might even feel like giving up. So make it slow and sure.

  1. Get a teacher.

The Quran cannot be learned without a teacher. Even the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) learned from angel Jibreel. Similarly, the messenger of Allah taught the Quran and listened to it from his companions. A good teacher will not only correct the person recitation but also teach the Tajweed and the rules correctly.

  1. Learn Quran and Tajweed with Noorani Qaida.

It is recommended that students who wish to learn the Quran begin their lessons with Noorani Qa’idah, which is one of the best sources of Tajweed learning.

The Noorani Qa’idah helps in learning the correct pronunciation of the Arabic words, its correct articulation, accent and emphasis on letters and words at the right time and place, as well as recitation at the proper pace.

  1. Learn with Understanding.

The important thing that helps in learning the Quran is to understand the meaning of the verses that one saves and knowledge of each other. Read the explanation of the verses and bring their meanings to mind while you are reciting them to aid in stronger memorization.

  1. Watch out for similar (analogous) portions of the Quran.

There is a similarity between some verses of the Quran in meaning, wording, or repetition of verses. Nearly 2,000 verses out of the 6,000 verses of the Quran carry either some sort of resemblance to others being completely same, or differences of one letter, a word or two, or more. Pay special attention so as not to be stuck in these places or make any mistakes.

  1. Set reasonable and possible goals

Set a daily quota of verses that you intend to learn with Tajweed. This may be different for everyone, according to his situations. However, a deed that is done consistently is far more beloved than one that is done in excess but not continued. Make sure that you learn “Tajweed and the Quran” as perfect; otherwise, reduce your goals so that whatever you learn is memorized by heart.

  1. Learn with others.

It is very common for one to make mistakes in reading or memorizing a Surah while learning it, without realizing, even when one looks at the Mushaf. If you have a companion or teacher who can listen to your recitation, this companion is a precise memorizer himself.

  1. Revise throughout the day and apply what you have learned.

A great way to constantly revise the lesson of the day is to recite in one’s Salah five times a day. Other great times to recite or listen again and revise what you have learned is in the car on the way to school/work, before sleeping, waiting at any other place such as the doctors, and so on.
